Proper body piercing aftercare should be easy and painless if you take good care of it and keep up with it.

First of all, when you get a piercing, DON’T TOUCH IT! It needs time to heal and messing with it can irritate it and let germs, dirt, etc get in it. Wash your hands first, then wash it twice a day (morning and night) with an anti-microbial or germicidal soap. (Satin or Provon). Avoid anti-bacterial and harsh soaps like Dial. (Do NOT use a Q-tip or anything like that, small pieces can get in your piercing and irritate it). You do not need to move or push your jewelry to get the soap in there, just wash the crusties off of the jewelry and around the hole. Another method (and perhaps the best) are saline soaks. Saline soaks are best for fresh piercings and promote quicker healing. You should get a small spray bottle and put sea salt (NON IODIZED!) (3-4 teaspoons a gallon) in it and spray your piercing every 2-3 hours to reduce pain and cleanse it. At night, soak your piercing with sea salt with a washcloth for 10-15 minutes. Do NOT take your jewelry out before the designated time that your piercer tells you. A piercing may feel and look healed on the outside but may still be healing on the inside. Be patient and clean it the entire time your piercer tells you. During healing your piercing may become itchy, red, secrete a whitish-yellowish fluid (not pus), or the skin may tighten around the jewelry. This is normal. If you suspect your piercing is infected (usually this only happens if you neglect it) see a medical professional and clean it. Do NOT take it out, for the infection can be closed over by the skin resulting in an abscess. If you would like to take your jewelry out, simply remove the jewelry and keep cleaning the hole until it closes over. It should only leave a small mark. Never take a piercing you like out for large amounts of time, even a piercing that you’ve had for years can close in a matter of minutes. If you follow these instructions, your piercing should heal fast and stay a great accessory. :)
